The Most Expensive Crash In F1!

Even if drivers lightly tap each other out on track, their front wings break. It's a frequent thing, usually drivers would come into the pits to get a new wing and the only consequence is losing time. However, during the 2004 Monaco Grand Prix, Christian Klien's small tap with the wall turned out to be really expensive. Klien's team Jaguar, was running with a one-off sponsorship from the film, Ocean's 12. As part of the deal, the F1 cars were fitted with stunning $300,000 diamonds to the front wings.

To sum it up, the Jaguar team fitted diamonds to the most fragile part of a F1 car, in the most challenging track where F1 cars go at 200mph neck and neck around a tight track.

What could go wrong? On the first lap of the Grand Prix, the F1 crashed into the wall. Because of safety regulations, the Jaguar team was not allowed to search the area for the diamond. By the time the race was over and the Jaguar team was allowed to search the area, the diamond was gone. Nobody knows what happend to the diamond. Perhaps one of the safety marshals at the crash took it for himself?
Those diamonds were on a loan from Israeli gem firm Steinmetz who unsurprisingly could not find anyone to insure them. This Pricy crash is widely regarded as the most expensive crash in F1.

  2. Awesome! I was actually at the 2004 Monaco Grand Prix! It was heartbreaking to see Christian Klien crash into the wall with the precious diamond! Must have been really sad for the Jaguar Team and their sponsor must have been as angry as the devil!

  3. Wow! That diamond is soooo beautiful and precious! I can't believe that the Jaguar team decided to put it on the most exposed and fragile part of the car, I would have put it on the steering wheel! Amazing post! Btw I showed this blog to my kids and they loved it! (They love F1 too!) Good Job!

  4. Rumour has it that the diamond was swept down a drain by the marshals who regularly swept small debris into the drains rather than pick it up

    2. Yep! The marshals shouldn't have been so careless! That diamond was priceless! The diamond could also been stolen by one of the marshals! Thanks so much for visiting my blog!
